What Netflix does

For most of its life Netflix was ad-free. In November 2022 it launched a cheaper plan with ads, initially built with Microsoft, and since 2025 it has run its own in-house ad technology platform. Programmatic buying through major DSPs lets advertisers reach its viewers automatically.

Netflix's move made ad-supported streaming (AVOD) mainstream and gave CTV advertisers one of the most-watched premium screens in the home.

How it makes money

Mostly subscription fees; advertising revenue from the ad-supported tier is a growing but smaller share.

Where it meets invalid traffic

As a logged-in, app-based service it faces less classic fraud, but its programmatic supply is still checked for CTV fraud and device spoofing by buyers and verification partners.
