What Roku does
Roku makes the software that runs millions of TVs and streaming sticks in North America. It sells ads on the home screen, in its free Roku Channel, and takes a share of ad inventory from many apps on its platform. That makes it a gatekeeper of the living-room TV screen.
In June 2026 Fox Corporation agreed to acquire Roku in a cash-and-stock deal; until it closes, Roku remains a listed company.
How it makes money
Platform revenue (advertising, share of app subscriptions, distribution fees) is the main engine; device sales are sold near cost.
Where it meets invalid traffic
Big target for CTV fraud schemes that spoof Roku devices or apps; Roku uses app and device authentication, and buyers rely on SSAI spoofing detection from verification vendors.
