What AppLovin does
AppLovin runs both sides of mobile game advertising: MAX, a ad mediation platform that app developers use to sell ad space, and AppDiscovery, which game studios use to buy ads that bring in new players. Its AXON machine-learning engine decides which ad to show.
Its results made it one of the best-performing stocks in the market. In 2025 it sold its own mobile games studio to focus on advertising, and has been expanding into e-commerce advertisers. Short-seller reports have questioned some of its practices, which AppLovin disputes.
How it makes money
Keeps a share of what advertisers pay for app installs and actions, and fees from its mediation and measurement tools (Adjust).
Where it meets invalid traffic
Mobile in-app ads face install fraud, click injection and SDK spoofing; AppLovin filters supply and owns the MMP Adjust, which runs fraud prevention.
