What The Trade Desk does
The Trade Desk is a DSP: software that advertisers and agencies use to buy ad space automatically across millions of websites, apps, streaming TV services and audio platforms. It does not own any media itself, which it pitches as a neutral alternative to Google and Amazon.
It has pushed industry-wide initiatives such as Unified ID 2.0, an open identity framework to replace third-party cookies, and OpenPath, which lets it connect directly to publishers and skip middlemen, a form of supply path optimization. Its AI platform is called Kokai.
How it makes money
Charges advertisers a platform fee, a percentage of the media spend that flows through its software (its take rate), plus fees for data and add-on features.
Where it meets invalid traffic
Applies pre-bid filtering of invalid traffic with partners such as HUMAN, and its supply-path programmes aim to cut out resellers, made-for-advertising sites and spoofed supply.
