Basics · also called seller, media owner

Publisher

A publisher is any owner of content or a digital property, such as a website, app, streaming service, podcast or screen network, that earns money by selling ad space to advertisers.

The short answer, from the AdTech Sumo glossary

In ad tech, "publisher" means the seller side: whoever owns the place where ads appear. That includes newspapers and blogs, but also mobile games, CTV apps, FAST channels, podcast networks, DOOH screen owners and retailers with their own sites.

Publishers package their space as ad inventory and sell it through direct-sold advertising deals, programmatic guaranteed and PMPs, or the open auction, using a publisher ad server and one or more SSPs to manage demand. Their core goals are yield (earning the most per visitor) while protecting user experience, which is why they care about fill rate, eCPM, lazy loading and ad refresh policies.

Publishers also carry responsibility for supply-chain honesty. Publishing an ads.txt or app-ads.txt file tells buyers which sellers are authorized, which protects them against domain spoofing. The term also covers bad actors: Made-for-advertising sites are technically publishers too, built mainly to harvest ad revenue rather than serve readers.

Think of it like this

A publisher is like a shopping-mall owner renting out billboard space along the corridors: the visitors come for the shops, and the ads pay the rent.

An example

A cricket news site in India with 50 million monthly page views and three ad slots per page has about 150 million monthly impressions to sell.
