WFA (World Federation of Advertisers)
The WFA (World Federation of Advertisers) is the global association of advertisers and national advertiser associations, based in Brussels, that represents brand owners on marketing, media and policy issues.
The WFA brings together many of the world's largest advertisers and dozens of national advertiser associations. Founded in 1953 and headquartered in Brussels, it works on responsible marketing, media effectiveness, cross-media measurement, privacy and regulation, especially in the EU.
In media, WFA has been active on ad fraud, transparency and measurement. It has published guidance for advertisers on combating ad fraud and backed industry initiatives on cross-media audience measurement. It also founded GARM (Global Alliance for Responsible Media) in 2019 to create common definitions for harmful content and brand safety; WFA discontinued GARM in August 2024 after X (formerly Twitter) sued it and several advertisers, alleging an illegal boycott.
WFA's national members include organisations such as the ANA in the US, ISBA in the UK and the Indian Society of Advertisers. It often works alongside the IAB and other bodies on global standards.
Think of it like this
The WFA is like the United Nations of advertisers: national associations and global brands meeting to agree positions, even if each still acts on its own.
An example
A multinational food company uses WFA guidance to set common brand-suitability and invalid-traffic rules for its media agencies across 30 countries.
