Basics · also called ad creative, the ad
Creative
A creative is the actual ad content a person sees or hears, such as an image, video, audio spot, HTML5 animation or native text, delivered into an ad slot.
In ad tech, "creative" is a noun: the file or code that makes up the ad. A display creative might be a JPEG, a GIF or an HTML5 bundle; a video creative is usually delivered inside a VAST tag; native creatives are assembled from parts (headline, image, logo, call to action) by the publisher's page.
Creatives must match the ad slot: the right size (see IAB standard ad sizes), file weight, length and format. They are uploaded to an advertiser ad server or DSP, reviewed for policy compliance, and then served with tracking and ad verification tags attached. DCO assembles creatives automatically from templates and data, and generative AI is increasingly used to produce variations.
Creative quality is often the biggest driver of results, more than targeting. It is also a security surface: Malvertising hides malicious code inside creatives, which is why publishers and SSPs scan them.
Think of it like this
The creative is the actual poster you glue to the billboard; the billboard itself is the ad slot.
An example
A campaign ships five creatives: a 15-second video, a 300×250 HTML5 banner, a 728×90 static, a 320×50 mobile banner and a native unit with a 1200×627 image and 25-character headline.
