California Limits Private Lawsuits Over Web Tracking Under Section 638.51
· 9h ago · Originally reported by PPC Land
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law restricting private individuals from filing lawsuits against website and app operators under Section 638.51, transferring enforcement authority to the state attorney general starting in 2027. This change will also apply to nearly 4,000 pending cases. Other sections of the California Invasion of Privacy Act may be similarly amended in the future.
Why it matters
This shift could reduce the legal risks and costs faced by digital businesses operating in California, impacting how privacy laws are enforced in the ad tech industry.
