Invalid traffic & fraud
IVT rate
IVT rate is the share of measured impressions, clicks or visits identified as invalid traffic, usually shown as a percentage and often split into GIVT and SIVT.
The IVT rate is the headline quality number in a verification report: invalid events divided by total measured events. If 1 million impressions were measured and 30,000 were flagged, the IVT rate is 3%.
The number only means something with context. Which tiers are included, GIVT only or GIVT plus SIVT? Which vendor measured it, and is that vendor MRC-accredited for those tiers? Is it measured pre-bid (share of requests blocked) or post-bid (share of served impressions)? Is it impressions, clicks or conversions? Different methods on the same campaign can produce quite different rates.
Averages also vary widely by channel, region, buying path and supplier. Traffic bought through direct deals with vetted publishers tends to show much lower IVT than open-exchange traffic from long reseller chains, and TAG has reported low IVT rates in channels meeting its certification requirements. Advertisers should track IVT by placement, seller and source rather than as one blended figure, because a single bad supplier can hide inside a respectable average. See also fraud rate, which measures the intentional subset.
Think of it like this
The IVT rate is like the percentage of counterfeit notes found in a cash deposit: useful as one number, but you still want to know which till they came from.
An example
A campaign in the UAE shows a blended 2.2% IVT, but breaking it down by seller reveals one reseller at 19% SIVT and the rest under 1%; removing that seller halves overall IVT.
