What is the difference between programmatic and direct ad buying?

Direct buying means an advertiser negotiates with a publisher, agrees price and volume in an insertion order, and the publisher serves the campaign. Programmatic buying uses software to buy impressions automatically, usually through auctions or automated deals across many publishers. Programmatic offers scale and targeting; direct offers control, premium placements and simpler supply chains.

Short answer · AdTech Sumo

Direct-sold advertising campaigns are booked through an insertion order and served by the publisher ad server at high priority, often for sponsorships, homepage takeovers and custom formats. Programmatic advertising spans the open auction, private marketplace deals and programmatic guaranteed, which automates a direct deal.

Most big advertisers use both. The trend is toward "programmatic direct": relationships negotiated like direct deals but executed through programmatic pipes, giving better transparency and fewer intermediaries.
