What is the difference between CTV and OTT?

OTT (over-the-top) describes how content is delivered: streamed over the internet instead of via cable, satellite or broadcast. CTV (connected TV) describes the device: a television screen connected to the internet. So an ad in a streaming app on a smart TV is both OTT and CTV, while the same stream watched on a phone is OTT but not CTV.

Short answer · AdTech Sumo

In practice, many people use OTT and CTV interchangeably, but buyers should clarify. An "OTT" campaign may include mobile and desktop streaming, which are cheaper and have different fraud risks than big-screen viewing.

Device spoofing exploits the confusion: fraudsters disguise mobile or desktop traffic as CTV to earn higher prices. Ask sellers for device-type breakdowns and verification data.
