Lead generation fraud is the submission of fake or misleading contact forms so that a lead seller gets paid. Bots fill forms with stolen or invented details, click farms submit real-looking entries, or sellers recycle old leads. Businesses paying per lead, such as insurers, lenders, schools and software firms, end up paying for prospects who never intended to buy.
Lead generation fraud thrives on CPA pricing: the seller is paid per form, not per sale. Signs include many leads from the same IP or device, forms completed in a second or two, invalid phone numbers, email addresses that bounce, and consent records that do not match the person.
Defenses include form-level bot detection, phone and email validation, consent certification services, and paying partners based on downstream quality rather than raw volume. Sales teams' feedback (who answered, who bought) is the best check on whether a lead source is real.
