What is data center traffic in advertising?
Data center traffic is ad activity that comes from IP addresses belonging to cloud providers and hosting companies rather than homes or mobile networks. Real people rarely browse from servers, so ad impressions from data centers are usually automated and are classed as general invalid traffic (GIVT), unless they come from a known legitimate source such as a corporate VPN or server-side ad insertion.
Maintaining lists of data-center IP ranges is a core GIVT filter required by the MRC IVT guidelines. It catches crawlers, scrapers and cheap bot farms. The nuance: some legitimate traffic also flows through servers, including corporate VPNs, privacy relays and SSAI in streaming, so good filters maintain exception lists rather than blocking every server IP.
Because data-center filtering is well known, sophisticated fraud moved to residential proxy networks and infected consumer devices. DoubleVerify's 2026 study still found data-center traffic dominated CTV fraud violations in several regions, showing the basic check remains valuable.
