What is curation in programmatic advertising?
Curation in programmatic advertising is packaging inventory from many publishers, often combined with audience or contextual data, into a ready-made deal that buyers can activate in their DSP. A curator, which might be an SSP, data company or agency, filters for quality and relevance so buyers get a cleaner, smaller supply set without negotiating with each publisher.
Curation grew from 2023 onwards as buyers sought an alternative to the messy open auction and as signal loss pushed data to the sell side. Curators apply data and quality filters at the SSP level and expose the result as a Deal ID. Microsoft Curate, Magnite, PubMatic and a number of independent curators are active.
Critics note curation adds another fee layer and can obscure where ads actually run, so the usual checks still apply: log-level delivery data, ads.txt and sellers.json verification, and independent IVT measurement.
