What is brand safety in advertising?
Brand safety means keeping ads away from content that could damage an advertiser's reputation, such as violence, hate speech, terrorism, adult content or misinformation. Brand suitability goes further, letting each brand choose which sensitive but legitimate topics, such as news about crime or politics, fit its values. Both are enforced with keyword, category and page-level classification tools.
Brand safety became a boardroom issue after 2017, when major brands pulled spending from YouTube over ads next to extremist videos. Industry frameworks now define risk categories and levels, and ad verification vendors classify pages and videos before or after the bid.
Over-blocking is a real cost: crude keyword blocklists have kept ads off legitimate news, hurting publishers. That is why many advertisers shifted to brand suitability settings and contextual targeting that understand meaning rather than single words. Brand safety also overlaps with fraud: Made-for-advertising sites and malvertising harm brands too.
